We have entered the greatest revolution in history – bigger than the agricultural, industrial, or American revolutions – this is a consciousness revolution. In this modern age of technology and global communications, we are able to know instantaneously what is going on all over the planet. Through these means of communication and social media outlets, we are increasingly aware of the shift that is taking place in our world. For the first time in history, we are beginning to understand that we all live on a very fragile space station. But unlike the one our astronauts built, it does not have any shuttles. We can’t get off. We’ve got to take care of it and make it livable for all of us.
Many of us are unable to imagine the levels of social and economic injustice that take place in our world, unless we’ve had direct exposure to those conditions. To put things into perspective: if you have food in the refrigerator, clothes in your closet and a roof over your head, you are better off than 75% of the people on the planet. Most Americans have no idea that our materialistic lifestyles are the result of corporate policies that misuse human and natural resources around the planet.
We are mistakenly taught that the way to business success is through maximizing profits regardless of the social and environmental costs. However, we now know that this has created a failed global economy, one where less than 5% of the population (the U.S.) consumes nearly 30% of the resources, while billions live in dire poverty. This is not only an unjust system, it is not conducive to a sustainable world for future generations.
